Gum disease starts out mild and its symptoms are minimal or possibly not noticeable at all. But if it is ignored, the inevitable result is that it will progress, eventually leading to more serious problems that you will not allow you to look the other way. Here at Implant and Cosmetic Dental Care, PLLC, we want you to know that the best gum treatment is a complete dental exam twice per year at our dentist in Middle Village office. But if you are finding signs of latter stage gum disease are present, seek us out immediately. If not addressed in a timely manner, you could end up losing vital gum and bone tissue, and maybe even teeth as a result.
The good news is that gingivitis, the first stage of gum disease, can typically be halted and its effects reversed with a simple teeth cleaning, which you will receive as part of your visit every six months at our dentist in Middle Village. While anyone can contract gingivitis, women who are pregnant, taking birth control pills, or those using steroids, with uncontrolled diabetes, or who use medication for seizures or blood pressure are at increased risk of gingivitis.
Untreated gingivitis is likely to become chronic periodontal disease, in which inflammation of the gums is likely. This is also where gum and bone tissue can begin to atrophy. Your gums may also begin to recede, which can give the illusion that your teeth are getting bigger. Aggressive periodontal disease is similar but moves more rapidly. In addition, gum disease can be an indication of issues elsewhere in the body, including heart disease, diabetes, and respiratory problems. And for those who are smokers, suffer from chronic stress, malnutrition, have immunosuppression, or have HIV, necrotizing periodontal disease may also be a concern.
Treatment can vary depending on the severity of your gum disease, but our dentist in Middle Village might be able to utilize a type of cleaning called scaling and root planing, in which hand scarping and/or ultrasonic tools are employed to dig down to the roots to remove the offending plaque, tartar, and bacteria at the center of things. Gum surgery might be necessary in the most extreme cases or for those who are at risk for more serious consequences.
